The Step-by-Step Process of a Machinery Move

Moving heavy industrial machinery isn’t just about muscle – it’s a carefully planned operation requiring technical precision, safety expertise, and the right equipment. At Reef Rigging, we specialise in machinery moves across KwaZulu-Natal, supporting everything from plant relocations to precision installations in confined spaces.

In this blog, we break down the typical process we follow for a successful machinery move – from initial planning through to final commissioning.

1. Site Inspection & Assessment

Every machinery move starts with a site visit. Our team conducts a full assessment of the machinery, location, and access routes. We take measurements, check structural limitations, and identify potential risks. This allows us to plan for the safest and most efficient lift possible.

2. Method Statement & Risk Assessment (MSRA)

Once the site is assessed, we develop a comprehensive MSRA. This document outlines exactly how the machinery will be moved, what equipment will be used, who will be involved, and the safety precautions in place. It’s reviewed and signed off before any physical work begins.

3. Planning & Equipment Preparation

We determine the right rigging gear for the job – whether it’s chain blocks, mobile cranes, jack-and-slide systems, or heavy-duty skates. We also prepare lifting lugs, spreader beams, and any custom-built frames if needed. Timing, manpower, and transport are scheduled to ensure seamless execution.

4. Machinery Disconnection & Preparation

Next, the machinery is made ready for transport. This includes mechanical disconnection, decommissioning of services, securing moving parts, and protecting sensitive components. Our team works closely with electricians, plumbers, and other specialists to ensure nothing is left to chance.

5. Lifting & Moving the Equipment

This is where the rigging work begins. Depending on the site, we may use forklifts, overhead gantries, crane trucks, or manual rigging techniques. Safety remains a top priority throughout the move. Clear communication, spotters, and proper signalling ensure the machinery is lifted and positioned without incident.

6. Transportation to New Location (if applicable)

If the machinery is being moved off-site, we load it securely onto a suitable truck or trailer. We handle permits, escort vehicles, and route planning if the move involves abnormal loads. Our team supervises the entire journey to ensure the equipment arrives safely and on time.

7. Offloading & Reinstallation

At the destination, we offload the machinery with the same care and precision used during collection. Reinstallation includes final positioning, levelling, alignment, and re-connection of utilities and services. We also assist in bolting down and vibration control if required.
